If you’re savvy about organic essential oils, you can easily make your own homemade air fresheners that will make your home smell great without all the toxic chemicals found in conventional air fresheners.
Before using essential oils to freshen your home, make sure you follow proper organic essential oil buying and safety practices (see tips below)
Burning essential oils: Buy an inexpensive, reusable oil burner and boil organic essential oils around the house.
Homemade sprays: Homemade organic fragrant room spray is another great alternative to chemical laden conventional air fresheners and they’re easy to make with organic essential oils. If you don’t keep essential oils around the house, the start up costs of making homemade air freshener will seem more expensive than buying a ready made bottle. However, keep in mind that one tiny bottle of organic essential oil will last forever and goes a really long way when used for cleaning.
Organic grapefruit lavender room spray
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup vodka. Vodka works as a freshener and preservative in your spray, but honestly, it’s not totally necessary. I don’t drink hard alcohol, so I never have vodka around, and this spray works fine without, I just make a smaller batch.
- Organic pure essential oil – about 15-20 drops of lavender and 12-15 drops of grapefruit
- One empty refillable spray bottle
Mix all the ingredients in the spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Spray around your house. If not using vodka, cut your water and essential oils amounts in half and mix those.
Organic clove, orange, and cinnamon room spray
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup vodka.
- Organic pure essential oil – about 10 drops of clove, 15-20 drops of orange, and 12 drops of cinnamon.
- One empty refillable spray bottle
Mix all your ingredients in the spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Spray around your house.
If you find that the scent of either of the above mixes is too strong or too weak you can adjust the essential oil content to suit your needs. I love a lot of scents, but some people are very scent-sensitive. Additionally, be very careful spraying these mixes near fabrics. While the mixes are people safe, the oils may stain fabrics if too much spray is concentrated on them.
Quick wipes and other essential oil uses: To freshen up a bathroom super quick, take an old small cleaning cloth, drop 8 drops of your favorite organic essential oil onto the cloth, and hide behind the toilet, in a drawer, or at the bottom of your waste basket. Your entire bathroom will smell nice.
You can also use a couple of drops of essential oil on an old cloth in the dryer to freshen clothing and towels.
